Samsung Galaxy S5 Breaks Records With Over 100K Pre-Registrations At T-Mobile In Under Two Days
Washington: A US company is planning to build an 'Outernet - a global network of cube satellites broadcasting Internet data to all the people on the planet - for free.
The idea is to offer free Internet access to all people, regardless of location, bypassing filtering or other means of censorship, according to the New York based non-profit organisation, Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF).
MDIF proposes that hundreds of cube satellites be built and launched to create a constellation of sorts in the sky, allowing anyone with a phone or computer to access Internet data sent to the satellites by several hundred ground stations.
The organisation claims that 40 per cent of the people in the world today are still not able to connect to the Internet - and it's not just because of restrictive governments such as North Korea - it's also due to the high cost of bringing service to remote areas, 'phys.org' reported.
An Outernet would allow people from Siberia to parts of the western US to remote islands or villages in Africa to receive the same news as those in New York or Tokyo.
The Outernet would be one-way - data would flow from feeders to the satellites which would broadcast to all below.
MDIF plans to add the ability to transmit from anywhere as well as soon as funds become available.
MDIF has acknowledged that building such a network would not be cheap. Such satellites typically run $100,000 to $300,000 to build and launch.
The timeline for the project calls for deploying the initial cubesats as early as next summer.

Microsoft partners with 9 more manufacturers for more Windows Phones
One of the main reasons that Windows Phones haven’t sold as much as Android smartphones is because of the lack of manufacturers. At launch, Microsoft had only a handful of manufacturers and as Windows Phone grew, the number of manufacturers shrunk and at one point, Microsoft bought out Nokia, which was probably the only company making Windows Phones.

After Satya Nadella took over, looks like Microsoft are serious about their smartphone OS – Windows Phone and at MWC 2014, they have announced that they are tying up with 9 more manufacturers to expand the reach of Windows Phone. The list of manufacturers are as follows

As you can see from the above list, Microsoft is trying to get into the mid-range smartphone segment more aggressively. Lenovo is currently one of the leading smartphone makers and a leading PC maker, a tie up with Lenovo is probably the best thing for Microsoft in the above tie ups.
The list also includes three names from the Indian mid-range Android manufactures – Karbonn, Xolo and Gionee. It is surprising that Micromax has been left out, but we can surely say that we can expect more Windows Phone in 2014 thanks to the new partnerships.
If you din’t know already, Microsoft had just announced support for dual SIM smartphones and that, combined with new manufacturers, is probably a step in the right direction for a company that once dominated the PC industry and now struggling in the mobile front.

Best Smartphones under 10000 in India – Jan 2014
So many Smartphones in the market today, each with some amazing features that it sometimes becomes very difficult to choose one. Especially when you have a mid range budget and there are loads of phones available for the same price. Before there were not many decent options available under Rs.10000. But in these recent years there have been lots of smartphones with great features available under 10K. You get a touch screen, decent camera, wireless connectivity, a good battery and so many others depending on the brand. Some features to look for are the OS version it’s running on and processor speed, screen size, 3G etc. Below mentioned are the phones that could be the best buys within a budget of around Rs.10000.

Nokia Lumia 520
If you want to buy a Windows 8 phone around INR 10K then Nokia Lumia 520 is your best bet. The phone itself is worth boasting about for its amazing looks [it carries the standard Nokia Lumia Design] and for its features. It has 4-inch WVGA screen powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon, 1GHz Dual Core processor and 512 MB RAM which is expectable at this price. It has 8 GB internal memory which is comparatively more than any other phone offering at this price and can be expanded to 64 GB. The OS is Windows 8 which is upgradeable to WP8 Amber. It has a primary camera of 5MP with geo tagging and autofocus feature. The 1430 mAh Nokia battery is pretty good to support you through the day.

Best BlackBerry Phones under 10000
Blackberry Curve 9220
Recommended for BlackBerry Loyalists. If you are a Blackberry fan and want to buy a blackberry but have restricted budget then this phone is for you. It is loaded with Blackberry 7.1 OS and 512 MB RAM in a QWERTY styled body. It comes with its dedicated BBM and probably you love it for that. Though with a large battery, it is thinner than its predecessor Curve 8520. It has a full plastic body but built quality is quite good. The camera is just 2MP with fixed focus which is a drawback. Internal memory is 512 MB but expandable upto 32 GB.
Paaji’s Comments: You can give it a shot if you are die hard Berry otherwise some Android phones offer better features at the same price.
Best Android Phones Under 10000
Lava Iris 505
Lava iris comes with a giant 5 inch display with 480*854 pixels. It is powered by 1.2 GHz dual core processor 512 MB RAM and Android 4.2 OS. It comes with 4 GB internal memory. It has an average 5MP primary Camera ably supported by 1.2 MP front Camera. It has 2000 mAh battery which is not bad and can see you through the day with few recreational activities (on your phone). This is an average phone but you may like it for its looks.
Paaji’s Comments: You should buy this phone for the giant display of 5” and not so bad battery life comparatively. You should not if you want a quad core processor, higher pixel density and good camera. The phone should have been priced a little lower considering other phones in this budget offer more.
Intex Aqua Wonder QuadCore
This interesting offering from Intex deserves mention. Intex Aqua Quad Core comes with a 4.5 inch IPS capacitive touch screen with 540*960 pixel resolution. It runs on Android 4.1 Jellybean, 1.2 GHz Quad-Core processor and 512 MB RAM. It has 4 GB internal memory and supports dual Sim cards. The quality of camera is good with 8 MP primary camera and 2 MP secondary camera for video calling and chatting.
Paaji’s Comments: Good display, Good processor, Good Camera within 10K. Some ignorable drawbacks are 512 MB RAM & 1800 mAh battery. So if you are more of a photographer than a gamer than you can choose this over S1 Titanium.
Panasonic T11
Panasonic T11 is the recent release from Panasonic in its budget phone series. The device is powered by Android 4.1 Jellybean & comes with 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor and 1 GB Ram (this is where it scores over Intex Aqua) which is decent. The camera seems average though with 5 mega pixels. It also has a secondary VGA camera at its front. The looks of the phone are not bad and has a glossy back cover finish. It comes with 1500 mAh battery which is quite very low.
Paaji’s Comments: If you are looking for a phone with good camera and larger battery life, you will be disappointed. However performance wise it is stable. It would not be a bad choice for its price. You can give it a try or choose other among the list.
Xolo Q700
Now this is one device which has captured the attention of many and has at the same time got good reviews from many Tech enthusiasts and mainly audience. It houses a Android 4.2 Jellybean OS, 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor and 1GB Ram and 4GB internal memory which is quite very good at this price. Coming to its looks and display – It comes with 4.5 inch IPS-LCD display with a decent 540*960 pixels. The looks of the device is pretty good like others in its series. The Xolo Q700 has a 2400 mAh battery, is said to provide 17 hours of 2G talktime and 16 hours on 3G. The drawback is only the camera which is not apt for low light but that’s a minor hitch. Overall Xolo Q700 is good option to go for under 10K.
Paaji’s Comments: With a little extra spend, XOLO Q700i is the good option to go if you wish a good camera could do more good to the existing above features. The only plus thing is that Q700i has 8MP rear camera and 2MP front in contrast to the 5MP and VGA. Other features pretty much remain same.
Karbonn S5 Titanium
Though priced slightly above 10k, the phone is worth that extra bit to be included. It has an amazingly large 5-inch qHD display with 540*960 pixel resolution. It runs on Android 4.1 Jellybean with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.2 GHz Quad-Core processor with 1GB RAM and 4GB internal memory which is pretty decent. The primary camera is 8MP with autofocus capabilities and 2MP secondary front camera. The performance is quite good and it’s a worthy upgrade to Titanium S1. The Li-Ion 2000 mAh battery should support you through the day with a heavy usage like games, browsing etc.
Paaji’s Comments: If you are looking for a phone with good performance especially to support your many Apps and Games & with a good Camera then this phone is definitely worth a shot.
Micromax A111 Canvas Doodle
Micromax captured the markets with its Canvas series. Most of its products have taken off quite well. A11 Canvas Doodle runs on Android 4.1.2 Jellybean and 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor with 512 MB RAM. It comes with a 5.3-inch display with 540×960 pixels resolution. It has 8 MP primary camera and 2 MP secondary camera at the front. The phone also comes with a stylus that lets you jot down notes or draw on the screen. Also the built and looks are quite good, comparable to high end devices.
Paaji’s Comments: At a price tag of Rs.10,000, if you are looking for a Smartphone with a large display, and a quad-core processor, but can compromise slightly on RAM, GO for it.

If you looking for budget phones under Rs 8000, than these below are good contenders -
Xolo A 500s
This is another budget phone offering from XOLO. XOLO has gained strong foothold in its budget smartphone series. The device comes with a 4inch display with 480*800 pixel resolution. It is powered by Android 4.2 Jellybean OS and 1.3 GHz dual core processor. It comes with 512 Mb RAM and 4GB internal memory. These features are pretty good at its price and performance is also not bad. It has 1400mAh battery (which is a drawback) and can provide upto 10Hrs of talktime on 2G network. The phone supports both 2G and 3G network.
Paaji’s Comments: Comparatively at a price less than INR 7000/-, the device offers a fairly decent functionality. This should probably rank as the best Smartphone under 7K.
Karbonn S1 Titanium
Karbonn Titanium S1 is another budget offering from Karbonn. It comes with a good 4.5 inch qHD IPS LCD display with 540*960 pixels. The device runs on Android 4.1 Jellybean OS, 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor, 1GB RAM and 4GB internal memory which are very decent features at its price. It however compromises on Camera front with only 5MP primary camera, supported by a secondary camera. Also the 1600 maH battery is bit less if you are game lover.
Paaji’s Comments: This is one phone loved by many for its pretty decent features at such a low price. Performance wise the phone stands up but lags on the camera and battery front.

Paajis Comments: Another new entrant into the phablet arena. Looks sturdy and well designed. Processing muscle is also upto par with most of its competitors. But a tad too pricey when compared to Galaxy Note 3 's 45,000 price tag, which also offers better specs and features. Overall, worth a buy if you want a change from iOS / Android environment, need a good camera and a fan of wireless charging.

Paajis Comments: Again, a well designed phone. It is a budget phablet phone and a toned down version of Lumia 1520. I feel the resolution of the screen is low for the 6 inch display and Nokia could have offered a better secondary camera. Looks like it will be popular amongst the students and will give a good competition to Galaxy Mega.

Sony Xperia Z1S
Why is it so darned hard to get Sony Xperia smartphones here in the US? Happily, T-Mobile has decided to offer Sony's flagship Android smartphones, albeit with a few months delay from their international release. The Xperia Z1S is the T-Mobile US version of the well-received Xperia Z1, and just a few things have changed: LTE bands, the headphone jack has moved to the center on the Z1S and S is a hair taller. The Xperia Z1S has flagship specs including what's currently the fastest Android smartphone CPU, the 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad core, 2 gigs of RAM and 32 gigs of internal storage. The phone has dual band WiFi 802.11ac with WiFi calling and mobile hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS as well as NFC. Unlike some Sony phones and tablets, the Xperia Z1 and Z1S do not have the IR blaster and AV remote control feature. T-Mobile prices it at a reasonable $528, or zero down with 24 monthly payments of $22.
The Xperia is a good looking phone with a black glass back (sorry, T-Mobile doesn't offer different colors) and a slim 0.34", angular design. Those of you who detest plastic phones will likely find phones like the classy glass Xperia Z1S and HTC One more to your liking. The Xperia pulls ahead of the HTC One with a faster CPU and a much higher resolution camera: 20.7 megapixels of imaging goodness vs. 4MP for the HTC One. In fact, the Sony has the highest megapixel count of any Android smartphone on the market. That translates into more fine detail, which is useful for those who want to use larger images or make prints.
The phone is a bit larger than competing 5" Android phones, and the rectangular design looks great but is less comfy in the hand than curvy phones like the LG G2 and Samsung Galaxy S4. The corners aren't sharp in the least, they're simply less hand friendly than gentle curves. The phone looks and is well made, and Sony's Xperia design language sets it apart from a sea of like-looking Android phones. It has a micro SDXC card slot and micro SIM card slot (under side doors), Sony's Xperia-style rounded metal power button, a dedicated camera button, a 3.5mm headphone jack up top and a speaker that runs the length of the bottom edge. Though glass-backed phones seem vulnerable, our also-glass backed Xperia Z has held up well, and we expect the same of the Z1S.
Waterproof and Dust Resistant
Here's something you don't usually see in a "designer" phone: the Xperia Z1S is waterproof and dust resistant (IPX5 and IPX8 rated). Most ports are covered by doors to prevent water intrusion, though the speaker and headphone jack are open and treated to be waterproof. For plumbers, outdoor workers, those who play by the pool and Adrian Monk types that want to wash their phones, this is a godsend. Underwater photographers will also enjoy the Z1S, but remember, you're limited to using the dedicated camera/shutter button the side, because capacitive touch doesn't work underwater.
Display
Full HD displays are the norm for high end smartphones, and the Xperia Z1S doesn't disappoint with its 5" Triluminos display. Sony features like Mobile Bravia 2 and X-Reality are here as well to enhance photo and video for increased saturation and contrast. The downside is viewing angles aren't as good as IPS displays or the Super AMOLED on the Samsung Galaxy S4. We noted some contrast and color fading when viewing the phone off angle, but I could still easily read the display when it was sitting near me on a desk. For those who generally hold the phone directly in front of themselves, it's not an issue, but for those who frequently share their display when watching video, it might be. In the Sony's favor, color accuracy and saturation are some of the best we've seen on an Android smartphone, and movie watching feels cinematic: colors are natural and bold without being cartoonish, contrast is pleasing and human flesh tones are warm and pleasing.
Like the LG G2 and Nexus 5, the Xperia uses on-screen Android back, home and multi-tasking buttons that take up a bit of bottom screen real estate, rather than capacitive or physical buttons like the Galaxy S4. When you're in an app, these buttons will generally turn into small dots as placeholders so they're visually less distracting than button graphics. On the downside, you have to remember what each of those three dots represents.
Calling and Data
The Xperia Z1S is the T-Mobile US version of the Z1, thus it has worldwide quad band GSM and EDGE with support for T-Mobile's 3G HSPA+ and 4G LTE bands. The phone has pentaband 3G (850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz) and LTE on bands 4 and 17. That means it will work on both GSM and 3G in most places in the world, but only on T-Mobile for LTE (note that you'll have to get an unlock code if you wish to use another carrier's SIM card). Data speeds will of course vary depending on coverage in your area. Here in Dallas, Texas, T-Mobile recently rolled out wideband LTE (20 + 20MHz spectrum) for theoretical 150Mbps max download and 50mbps upload speeds. In fact, close to a cell tower beside a T-Mobile store, we actually did get 100.97mbps down and nearly 30mbps up according to the speedtest.net app. Wow! T-Mobile will roll out wideband LTE in some but not all cities, but all major metro regions should have standard 10 or 20MHz spectrum LTE by now.
Call quality is very good on the Xperia Z1S, and both incoming and outgoing voice are clear and full. Speakerphone volume is a bit lower than average while earpiece volume is average. Sony's waterproofing of the earpiece hasn't degraded voice quality or volume, but we suspect it might be to blame for the not terribly loud speaker. Headphone quality is excellent and we really enjoyed listening to music via a decent quality wired headset. Of course you can use Bluetooth wireless speakers, stereo headphones and mono headsets with the phone, and we found audio quality to be good over Bluetooth.
Horsepower and Software
Just as with the Galaxy S4 and LG G2, the current all-star CPU is under the hood. The 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 quad core CPU with Adreno 330 graphics is currently the best you can get in an Android phone, and it can handle anything you throw at it. 3D games like Real Racing 3, 4K video playback: it's all good. The phone feels fast and smooth in operation with quick app load times and fluid animations.
It helps that Sony's light customization of Android Jelly Bean 4.3 doesn't weigh down the phone, as do the heavier skins and customizations on the LG G2 and Samsung Galaxy phones. In fact, we really like Sony's tasteful and restrained approach to Android. They do add several programs that work hand-in-hand with Sony's various online services, including Album, Movies, Walkman and PlayStation Mobile. Even if you don't use Sony's cloud services or wish to rent/buy movies from them, these are great looking multimedia playback apps with quick access to EQ, locally stored media, cloud media and even native support for network hard drives that act as media servers via dLNA. PlayStation fans will enjoy PlayStation Mobile where you can download some of the same PS Vita and PlayStation 2 games but ported to Android. There's also a PlayStation app with access to your PSN profile, friends list, trophies and a PlayStation 4 second screen feature. It's refreshing that Sony's software additions make the phone more fun and easy to use for multimedia and gaming rather than just adding bloat.

Camera
Here's the star of the show: the 20.7 megapixel rear camera with a relatively large (by phone standards) 1/2.3" Sony Exmor RS sensor and a fast Sony G f/2.0 lens. No, it won't impress Nokia Lumia 1020 owners for sensor size and resolution, but the Xperia's speed will impress Lumia owners. The phone has quick shot times and fast focus times in good light. In a very dim to dark room, focus is slower, but the same is true of most camera phones. Image detail is excellent and noise is held in check with ISO under 400 to 800. Colors are bold and natural and exposure is good, though in intelligent auto mode, it does blow out some highlights in high contrast scenes. Certainly the images are good enough that you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between images taken with the Xperia Z1S and a 16MP point and shoot.
Today's top Android phones have 13MP cameras and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom (more of a camera than a phone in terms of design and ergonomics) is 16 megapixels. More pixels don't always mean better images, but in this case those pixels mean better 8 x 10 prints or photo frame images and finer detail for larger images used on websites. If you rarely look at your camera phone's photos on anything but your phone, this won't matter. But for those who do use images for websites, photo sharing and playback on larger screens the Sony has an edge.
The camera can shoot 1080p video, but it uses digital image stabilization rather than optical image stabilization (OIS). Few phones have OIS, with the Lumia 1020 and LG G2 being two in that rare club. OIS increases hand motion smoothness more effectively than digital stabilization. That said, Xperia footage doesn't look jerky or jumpy, but we could see some jitter and jumps caused by our less than steady hands.
Sony sets their intelligent auto mode as the default, and it does a good job when the scene is well lit. In dark settings, I found using manual settings reduced image noise, though I suspect average users will be happy with auto mode's results. When in iAuto mode, you won't see lots of settings, but once you select manual you'll get a wealth of settings for shutter speed, ISO, metering, stabilization, white balance and a selection of scene modes. Sony offers additional modes including a background defocus mode to create SLR style bokeh, Info-eye (augmented reality plus 2D and 3D bar code readers), timeshift burst, sweep panorama and picture effects.
The Xperia has a front 2.1MP camera that can shoot 1080p video and yields clear and bright video chat footage.
Battery Life
Like the LG G2, the Xperia Z1S is an "average" size Android phone with a huge battery inside. That translates into excellent runtimes, even with brightness turned up and both LTE and WiFi on and active throughout the day. The 3,000 mAh battery is sealed inside, and we had no trouble making it through the day (8am to 10pm) with moderate to heavy use that included web browsing, HD video streaming for an hour, email, using the GPS for a 30 minute trip, playing music in the background with the display turned off for an hour and playing games for 45 minutes.
Conclusion
It took Sony a few tries to make a flagship Android smartphone that truly has flagship specs, but they've managed nicely with the Sony Xperia Z1S and Z1. The Xperia Z1S has the fastest CPU currently available, all the wireless bells and whistles including WiFi 802.11ac with WiFi calling and mobile hotspot, fast LTE 4G and NFC. Even if viewing angles aren't as wide as the competition, the full HD Triluminos display is one of the prettiest we've seen with very wide color gamut and a luminous look when watching HD movies. The design stands out and the all-glass look is striking. Sure, it attracts fingerprints, but this is one of the few washable smartphones on the market!
